I started reading about the tragedies “Romeo and Juliet” and
“Hamlet” so I could pick out which one I
wanted to study in the next few weeks. At first I was leaning toward picking
“Romeo and Juliet” because I've heard so much about and knew a little so I wouldn't “be on shaky ground”.
One thing I really thought was interesting was that neither of these two plays were set in England; Shakespeare’s home country. I really thought England would be where he set his plays. “Romeo and Juliet” was set in Verona Italy, which was a matching setting to the play because Italy is mostly thought of as the country of love. “Hamlet” was set in Denmark which is where Hamlet is from.
Both plays are based on stories. “Hamlet” was based on a story from Denmark and Norway and “Romeo and Juliet” was based on as Italian tale. What Shakespeare did to make them not copycat plays is dramatized the play, changed some settings and created different acts and changed some of the characters. Also “Romeo and Juliet” was switched from a comedy to a tragedy by Shakespeare, which added tension and drama.
I decided on the play “Hamlet” to further pursue and gain more knowledge about. I chose this play to learn more about because I want a broader knowledge of the plays William Shakespeare wrote. By pursuing this play I’ll hope to learn more about why Shakespeare wrote a lot of tragedies and more about how he specifically wrote.
These are the sites I spent the most time on.
